Editor’s Note: Minutes after I posted today’s article about fuelwood opportunities on the Camino Real Ranger District of the Carson National Forest I received this press release from Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado, offering opportunities for fuelwood permits in the Chama, New Mexico area.

Subject: USFS News Release – Rio Grande National Forest to offer fuelwood permits in Chama
La Jara, Colo., April. 20, 2022– The Conejos Peak Ranger District of the Rio Grande National Forest will be offering fuelwood sales in Chama, NM in early May. This is a great opportunity for Chama area citizens to purchase the required permits without making the trip to La Jara, CO.
“We value our forest users in Chama and are happy to provide this service,” said Conejos Peak District Ranger Andreas Jones. “Most wood cutting areas close to Chama are not snow free yet, but we want help ensure that residents have their permits in-hand for when conditions do dry out.”
Here are the specifics:
When: Wednesday, May 4, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Where: Lowes Grocery Store – US highway 64, just south of the highway 17 junction.
Who: The Visitor Information Specialist from the Conejos Peak Ranger District will be there to offer these forest product permits.
What: Fuelwood (firewood) permits that are valid on the Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado will be offered for sale.
