Press Release: Green Amendment to the NM Constitution

National Environmental Justice Experts Lead the Journey Towards a Green Amendment to the New Mexico Constitution

Lora A. Lucero
RELEASE DATE: July 4, 2021

Albuquerque, New Mexico —NM Senator Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, Terry Sloan, Director of the Southwest Native Cultures, and Maya Van Rossum, Founder of Green Amendments for the Generations, will be launching the inaugural Green Amendment Day on July 13th, followed by a discussion about the benefits of a Green Amendment to the New Mexico Constitution at the PDACNM meeting on July 14th.  Both virtual events are free and open to the public.

Green Amendment Day (July 13) is dedicated to educating and engaging civil rights, environmental, environmental justice and Indigenous leaders and community members across the nation around the power of Green Amendments for ending environmental racism and restoring environmental justice through constitutional empowerment.

Environmental racism is widespread and ingrained in our society, and we must convince our legislators that the green amendment is needed to combat it.  Communities of color disproportionately live in environmental sacrifice zones, where industrial contaminants, pollution, and other poisons degrade water, air, and soil, causing heart disease, asthma, cancer, compromised immune systems, and other serious illnesses.

Ending environmental racism and securing true environmental justice requires systemic legal and government reform. By providing constitutional recognition and protection we can raise up the inalienable rights of all people to a clean & healthy environment, and transform our system of laws and government to ensure environmental justice is mandatory, equitable and enforceable.
